Charcoal, this darker neutral is one of the most versatile of the bunch. Pair is with other easy foundation tones or any shade of pastel. The most modern neutral, charcoal gray looks great in dining rooms, living rooms and even nurseries. Here's how to use it best. Charcoal gray may be a neutral, but it's also a statement. It's bolder than its lighter brethren; more modern than its neutral cousins, the beiges; and less dramatic than black. True gray (or achromatic gray) is a mixture of black and white. It has equal values of red, green and blue (RGB), and thus no hue. Off-grays — what we most often use in decorating — have very subtle but important differences in the values of red, green and blue. Cool grays are noticeably blue, green or violet. Warm grays are noticeably pinkish or brown and may have yellow tones.
Arrange your bedroom furniture to fit the available floor space, leaving a minimum 3-foot clearance for major walkways and in front of sliding glass doors. If you place your medium-toned cherry bed in front of a window, the natural light will likely accelerate the wood-darkening process. Place a comfortable armchair diagonally against a bedroom corner to provide a convenient spot for relaxing or reading. Select a striped upholstery fabric in muted greens, yellows and reds to enhance your cherry bedroom furniture hues. Beige is a neutral, often among contractors' favorites, earning it the title "builder's beige." Occasionally, it's perceived as bland -- but combined with cherry wood, the look is harmonious. Warm, sandy yellowish brown sits near warm red on the color wheel, making them analogous colors. Achieve a slightly cooler, more modern note by opting for greige -- a gray-beige mix. To bring out the brown notes in your wood, go with an icy-blue white paint. Or achieve a clean, contemporary air with pure white.
